El silencio es un recurso comunicativo plurifuncional cuyos significados varían dependiendo de factores contextuales y culturales (Jaworski 1993; Poyatos 1994; Cestero 2000; Escandell 2006; Ephratt 2008; Camargo y Méndez 2013). La naturaleza pragmática y sociolingüística del fenómeno aconseja ir caso a caso atendiendo al contexto, las variables sociales y la relación entre los participantes. Para este estudio, se partirá de los resultados del análisis de un corpus de 9 horas de conversaciones espontáneas mantenidas por 6 mujeres jóvenes universitarias españolas (1,5 horas por informante) y se presentarán (1) una taxonomía de los silencios producidos por las informantes, y (2) la relación entre la duración y la intencionalidad de los actos silenciosos con el sexo de los interlocutores (3 de las mujeres del análisis conversan con hombres y las otras 3 conversan con mujeres). Todo ello se hará desde la perspectiva del enfoque dinámico para el estudio de la relación entre lengua y género (Eckert y McConnell-Ginet 2003). De este modo, se constatará que las mujeres utilizan el silencio como estrategia interactiva básica de forma diferente cuando conversan con mujeres y cuando lo hacen con hombres.

·Abstract

Silence is a multifunctional communicative resource with different meanings depending on contextual and cultural factors (Jaworski 1993; Poyatos 1994; Cestero 2000; Escandell 2006; Ephratt 2008, Camargo and Mendez 2013). Due to its Pragmatic and Sociolinguistic nature, it is necessary to proceed case by case and to consider the specific context, the social variables and the relationship between the participants. In this study, we will present the results of the analysis of a corpus of 9 hours of spontaneous conversations between 6 young graduate Spanish women (1,5 hours by informant) in order to present: (1) a taxonomy of the types of silence produced by the informants, and (2) the relationship between the intentionality and the duration of the silent acts with the gender variable (3 women speak with men and the other 3 do it with women). The analysis has been carried out from the perspective of the dynamic approach for the study of the relation between gender and language (Eckert and McConnell-Ginet 2003). Thus, it will be shown that silence is a basic interactive strategy which presents some differences in women when they speak with other women and when they speak with men.
