·Resumen

Con ocasión del cincuenta aniversario de la publicación de la obra de Chomsky, Lingüística cartesiana (1966), este artículo trata de averiguar por qué un libro tan impugnado se convirtió en un clásico de la historia de las ideas. El artículo revisa la literatura secundaria más relevante sobre él. Se estructura en una introducción, una sección final, y dos apartados centrales. En lo que a estos se refiere, mientras en el primero se analiza el complejo entramado de motivos que impulsaron y guiaron a Chomsky en la realización de su libro, en el segundo se estudia el enfoque historiográfico desplegado en el mismo y la concepción general de la historia implícita en el proyecto. Concluimos que la investigación de Chomsky, sin pretenderlo y sin hacer ninguna formulación explícita, sino abriendo nuevos ámbitos de discusión e investigación, planteó cuestiones generales y de alcance relativas a la epistemología de la historiografía de la lingüística y de las distintas ramas del conocimiento, y en general relativas a la epistemología de las ciencias sociales. La intensa controversia que suscitó la forma en que Chomsky manejó en Lingüística cartesiana estos temas y problemas –de los cuales aquí nos centramos en dos: la relación entre conocimiento e interés, y la historicidad del conocimiento– y el hecho de que el debate aún hoy persista, testimonian la actualidad de la obra.

·Abstract

On the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the publication of Chomsky’s Cartesian Linguistics (1966), the present article aims to determine why such a refuted book became a classic of the historiography of ideas. The article uses a methodology based on the examination of the most relevant secondary literature. It is composed of an introduction, some concluding remarks, and two main sections. As to the central headings, whereas the first analyzes the complex network of Chomsky’s motives for the making of the book, the second studies its historiographical approach and the overall conception of history hidden in the project. We conclude that Chomsky’s research, though neither purposely or explicitly, but rather opening up new realms of discussion and research, raised major issues regarding the epistemology of the historiography of linguistics and of other branches of knowledge, as well as the epistemology of the social sciences. The passionate controversy provoked by the way Cartesian Linguistics envisaged such problems and topics – here we pay special attention to two of them: the relationship between knowledge and interest, and the historicity of knowledge – and the fact that the debate still remains alive, certify the current importance of this work.
